The Perceptions of Modern Hypnotherapy

The old Svengali-like perception of hypnotherapy often associated with mind control is rapidly being replaced by its effectiveness in dealing with a wide variety of psychological and psychosomatic (physical issues confirmed in the mind) issues.

People suffering from negative emotions, bad behaviours and other psychological issues can use the help of a skilfull hypnotherapist to change their patterns and replace them with more positive ones.

Despite its benefits, many people are confused about hypnotherapy and hypnosis in general and they often avoid hypnosis as a potential treatment due to this.

Some of the obvious misconceptions are: –

1.”I fear getting stuck in the state of hypnosis”

This is a very common fear up until today. The good news is that there have been no recorded cases of patients getting “stuck” in the state of hypnosis.

Rarely a person can enjoy the experience of being hypnotized so much, that they appear unresponsive to the hypnotherapist’s instructions to emerge from hypnosis. Other than that, you remain in control; you can – if the need should arise – open your eyes at any point.

2.”I do not wish to be controlled by my hypnotherapist!!”

Many people associate the evil Svengali character who would use his powers to control people, with hypnosis. This is not true whatsoever and the media and stage hypnosis is also partly to blame for this common fear that people have.

It is important to remember that the patient is always in control throughout the hypnosis period and can accept or reject any suggestions that might be passed on by the therapist.

3.”I do not think I can go in to a state of hypnosis”

The ability to go into a state of hypnosis is a skill that can be developed over time. Some people are naturally more talented at hypnosis, just as they may be more talented at music or arts, but everybody can improve their hypnotic abilities with practice.

A skilled therapist will work individually with each client to make sute that they have the right tools and understandings to get the desired results with hypnosis.

4.”Will I still be conscious?”

Contrary to popular belief, many patients report back that they feel more aware and in touch with their surroundings during hypnosis. This is because the mind is very relaxed and still.

5.”Will my therapist know all my secrets?”

Again, this is impossible because as mentioned earlier, patients are always in control throughout the session. The only thing that has been reported by patients is that they feel more accepting and open to the positive suggestions made by their therapist.

This is one of the reasons that materials discovered in a hypnotic state are not admitted in court. A person can lie very easily in hypnosis if they wish to do so.

Once people understand hypnosis better, they are more able to use it effectively as a patient and get better results.

Hypnosis has been developed throughout decades and people are finding it to be more effective then conventional routes in many cases.

EFT for Better Golf: Part 1 – So What Is EFT

I’ve been reading a lot on the web recently about people getting success using Emotional Freedom Techniques – EFT to improve their golf and overcome and overcome their golf psychology problems. So, I decided that this week I’ll write a few posts about what EFT actually is, how you use it and how to use it for better golf.

So, why am I telling you about EFT when I’m a golf hypnotist? Well there are four main reasons:

To quote Gary Craig who invented EFT, “It often works where nothing else will”. It’s used a lot by hypnotherapists to supplement their trance work with clients. I learned about it from Paul McKenna and Richard Bandler on my NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner training courses. And I’ve seen Paul use it in combination with hypnosis when working with clients. It’s easy to apply it to yourself and the basic technique is very easy to learn.

Put simply, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is an exciting breakthrough in therapy and personal development. It is a new treatment tool for anxieties, fears, trauma, procrastination, addictions, weight loss and much more. It uses an easily learnt process to transform any issues blocking emotional happiness or personal achievement.

It is one of the new Energy Psychologies people are developing primarily from the ancient Chinese meridian energy system. EFT uses a form of acupressure often referred to by its advocates as “acupuncture without needles” and is based by its creator on the premise that all negative emotions are the result of a disruption in the body’s energy system.

The practitioner clears blockages or disruptions in the body’s energy systems by directly tapping with the fingers on the client’s head and upper body at key end points of the body’s energy meridians while focussing the client’s thoughts on the specific psychological issue they wish to change. The tapping sends pulses of energy to rebalance the body’s energy system in relation to the client’s thoughts and specific issue. Shifting energy changes the way the brain processes information about a particular issue, and so tapping while tuned in to the issue is in effect rewiring or rerouting the brain’s conditioned negative response. This is generally very liberating for a client suffering conditions like a phobia or traumatic memory. EFT also works in the same way to release the limiting thoughts and beliefs that obstruct the client’s success, happiness, health and inner peace.

EFT is the work of Gary Craig, an engineer by training, resulting from his interest in the success of Thought Field Therapy, a complex set of processes that Dr Roger Callahan developed in California. He took the complexity of TFT and simplified it into a straightforward “one size fits all” process to create EFT.

So that’s broadly what EFT is and where it comes from. In Part 2, I’ll continue with the “Basic Recipe” for EFT and get you tapping.

Why EFT Works For Weight Loss

Here’s an explanation of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) for weight loss — how and why it works.

Gary Craig has written extensively on his site ( about the way weight loss works, at least the way it is supposed to work . . . you know, that basic mathematical formula . . . expend more than you take in, and you’ll lose weight. But the advice we have all heard (eat less . . . exercise more) isn’t all that helpful.

Why is that?

One simple reason — there are emotions behind eating that interfere with the desire to lose weight.

I don’t have to tell you that obesity is at epidemic proportions. 2/3 of Americans are overweight. Diabetes eats up $1 of every $5 spent on healthcare. A recent study at Harvard showed that obesity may soon surpass tobacco as the #1 cause of cancer deaths.

At least 95% of dieters fail, and will regain their weight and more within 2 years.

The mechanism of EFT for emotional eating and weight loss

Something very subtle is at the root of emotional eating. Unresolved emotional issues or traumatic events create blocks or disruptions in the body’s subtle energy system. These blocks create an “anxiety short circuit,” which in turn, causes someone to overeat.

The overeating calms the anxiety, but at the expense of consuming too many calories.

EFT is very soothing and relaxing. It usually removes the anxiety, and with the anxiety gone, the drive for emotional eating disappears. Further EFT helps to reprogram your energy system, so that you eat for nutrition, rather than having to tranquilize emotions.

It’s very similar to acupuncture in that way. People say that acupuncture is very relaxing. EFT has the same effect.

2 Ways To Help

EFT helps people resolve emotional issues because it addresses the energy imbalance as well as the negative emotions that are creating the energy imbalance. As you resolve your emotional issues at a deep energetic level using EFT, your self-defeating overeating behaviors will likely diminish or disappear, usually permanently.

This all happens without willpower. The tendency to respond to emotional issues by consuming food often fades. You are then freer to make other choices in response to emotions.

Addictive Food Cravings

Simply put, the cravings we get are often a result of stress, anxiety or another emotional event. Learning to deal with these moments without tranquilizing yourself with food can make a big difference in your ability to lose weight.

People generally pay too much attention to external factors, such as obsessively counting calories, and not enough attention to internal factors, such as emotions and what’s going on inside.

Our bodies can actually crave high sugar and high fat foods in an attempt to medicate ourselves into a calmer state (we don’t like to be upset) when we are avoiding our emotions or feeling a lot of stress.

When we are in those emotional or stressful states, our body’s energy flow is blocked or disrupted, creating a zzzzzzt in the system, like a short circuit.

EFT can eliminate those cravings almost instantly.

It works like acupuncture to stimulate the meridian system to bring it back into balance. Many people choose EFT as a confidential way to work on emotional overeating issues. The key is using EFT regularly, if necessary. Many people just try it out and stop if they don’t get results right away.

How Else Can EFT Help For Weight Loss?

Besides stopping addictive cravings, EFT can help manage and sort out the emotions that drive them. We all know that it’s not as simple as “eat less . . . exercise more.” Simply managing the frustration and discouragement around weight loss issues is phenomenal.

EFT can help manage negative thoughts, such as “I’ll never lose weight, so why bother?” These thoughts are self-sabotaging in nature, and counterproductive.

Stopping self-sabotage is an essential piece of the weight loss puzzle. After all, what good is weight loss if you can’t hang onto it?

Insomnia Free With Eft

Would you like a ‘secret’ friend to help you overcome your insomnia?

Let me tell you about Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). It is one of the most highly effective, energy-healing processes available to us today. It is a very easy method to open up blocked energy channels in our bodies. It is important to understand the basic principles of EFT, so that you can easily apply the process to your sleep issues. EFT can be used as a pre-bed activity or can be implemented if you wake up during the night and have difficulty going back to sleep.

But first, let’s develop a general understanding about the process itself. As you are aware, the human body has a tremendous amount of energy flowing through it along the energy meridians. The understanding is that when energy is blocked in one of these systems, it can have a direct physiological effect and can cause any number of illnesses, pains, negative emotions, feelings and behaviors. None of this is comfortable, nor do we want this discomfort to remain in our bodies.

EFT is a very simple process that can effectively alleviate, mitigate or remove these energy blockages in many circumstances. The EFT process is easy to learn and to remember. You physically use your fingertips to tap on the body’s energy meridians (acupoints) thereby opening the energy channels and clearing the energy blockage. You can view the actual tapping points at Honestly, it takes about 1 – 2 minutes to gently tap each of these acupoints about 5 to 7 times each. This process is very quick to do and often is amazingly successful. It is a painless form of acupuncture, which the Chinese and other eastern cultures have been using for over 5000 years to heal any number of maladies.

The founder of EFT is Gary Craig. EFT has been in existence since 1995. There are literally thousands upon thousands of case studies chronicling its effectiveness for healing and eliminating many negative and painful issues in our lives that bother us whether emotional, psychological or physiological – sleep is just one of these issues. As Gary Craig says, try it on everything. You can visit his extensive web site at – Here you will find a wealth of information, excellent instructional CD’s and DVD’s, as well as wide-ranging testimonials on the effectiveness of using EFT for what ails you, including insomnia.

Thinking you must solve a problem now can cause many wakeful hours. If you are worrying about a current problem and attempting to find a solution to alleviate the problem, this situation can be frequently “taken to bed”, which further feeds your insomnia.

Anxiety is a real sleep-depriver. Perhaps you are dwelling on an anxiety-producing situation like dealing with a sick family member, a recent death, marital problem, maintaining your job, or some dominant health or business issue. When these anxiety-producing thoughts surface before going to bed or during the night, write them down.

Your subconscious is extremely powerful. If you turn your issues over to your subconscious, many creative solutions will present themselves. It is well known that many famous inventions have originated during sleep or while the inventor is in the theta wave state. The issue(s) causing your insomnia may be hidden deeply in your subconscious. EFT can be an excellent too to use to uncover whatever you’ve buried.

Let me give you an example. One night while awake with thoughts running rampant, I found myself thinking incessantly about what I was going to wear the next day. The clothing options played over and over in my mind. Even when I’d made a mental choice, I still couldn’t seem to let go of the mental chatter. Two days later I had a session with an EFT specialist to probe deeper into this wakefulness. When asked what I’d thought about during this extended wake-up period, I explained my relentless thoughts about what to wear, which in hindsight was ridiculous as I have lots of clothes that I look good in. So why did these thoughts keep me awake? It all boiled down to my perfectionism. And why did I need to be perfect? With some probing, I realized it all stemmed from wanting to please my parents. Wow! Did that ever go back a long way. We tapped on this perceived (and unrealistic) need to be perfect.

That was a number of months ago since this writing. I just realized that this particular subconscious issue has not returned even during any minor wake–up. You just simply may not know what is buried ~ how deep ~ and how far back it goes.

You can do EFT on your own, however sometimes, when the issues run deeper, a skilled practitioner can lead you to uncovering the issue quite quickly.

Practicing EFT

There are basically 3 easy ways to practice EFT:

1. On your own

2. Tapping along with Gary Craig’s CD/DVD’s.

3. Tapping with an EFT specialist.

Sometimes, getting to the heart of the matter requires another set of eyes and ears.

You know by now that you create your daytime reality. Let EFT help you create a positive nighttime reality. In general, EFT is a remarkable healing process. It can reduce or totally eliminate stress and emotions resulting from stressful events. The result? You sleep more restfully.
