How Hypnosis And Hypnotherapy Work With The Subconscious Mind

otherapist who uses hypnosis and hypnotherapy, I must admit that it sometimes feels as if I have two quite different, seperate individuals in the chair at the same time The two certainly are related and they seem to know quite a bit about each other. They seem to have passed through some very similar experiences. But they simply don’t seem to communicate well with each other. One person is entirely rational and logical; they analyze and compare, measure and debate. Whenever I talk with these people I make quite sure that I use the language of logic. The other person in the chair is remarkably different. They care nothing for logic. They make absolutely no demand that things be rational. They feel and they function on an emotional, rather than a cerebral level. I make quite certain that I use the language of imagination when I speak with these people. Of course, I don’t actually have two different people in my therapy chair, but it can certainly feel as if I do. That first person, analytical and logical, is simply the conscious mind, while the other feeling person is the subconscious mind. Both are useful, indeed essential parts of the self, yet their nature is quite different. And often they can be at odds with each other. In order to better understand this it is useful to understand something of the way in which our minds work. You see, the conscious mind is that part of us that reasons. It is basically who we think we are. It is the home of will power and of conscious decision making. However, it is the subconscious mind that is the part of us which experiences emotions. It is basically who we feel we are. It is the repository of our habits and our beliefs. We also have a third part, and that is the unconscious mind. This is the part of us that is responsible for the smooth running of all those processes that we simply take for granted – our breathing and heart beat, the regulation of our body temperature, the functioning of our autonomic nervous system. It’s what keeps things going when we sleep and when we are awake, without our ever really having to think about it or give it instructions. When clients visit me, it’s most often because they have been having real problems with the way they have been feeling. Usually, they’ve done everthing they could possibly think of in order to feel better. They have tried to deny the problem, use will-power in an attempt to make it go away. They have tried to think it away; to conquer it with logic, telling themselves to ‘stop being silly’. Yet nothing has worked. This seldom surprises me. In any battle between feelings and logic, the feelings will almost always win. We might fully understand that something is ‘silly’, but understanding that something is silly and letting it go are two very different things. This is simply because the true power of the human mind does not really lie in the conscious logical part, but in the subconscious feeling part. Usually the subconscious mind is working in a certain way because of an experience or series of experiences that happened in the past. The actual experience itself is in fact far less important than what the mind did with that experience; how it was processed and perceived – or misperceived. Based on past perception – often the perception of the child – a belief was born and this belief became firmly implanted in the subconscious mind, working as a piece of software might work in some powerful bio-computer. And if that perception was faulty, then it produced a belief that grew stronger and stronger, until it began generating and driving uncomfortable feelings such as fear, anxiety, apprehension, worry, depression and low self-esteem. The difficulty is that no matter how hard we try, no amount of will power is able to diffuse and get rid of it. The good news is that with hypnosis and hypno psychotherapy, we can reach into the subconscious part of the mind, talking to it in its own language. Because the subconscious mind forgets nothing, we can uncover the source of the difficult feelings – the misperception and the faulty belief – and we can realign it and re-educate it, thereby neutralising its power to disturb. Moreover, because hypnosis works hand in glove with the autonomous nervous system, we can even help it to work optimally, speeding up healing, bolstering the immune system, and even managing pain. If you sometimes feel as if there are two parts of you, and that they are at odds with each other then in many ways you are right. Knowing this, you are in an excellent position to help both parts function in the very best of ways. Through expertly delivered hypnosis and hypnotherapy – or through regular self-hypnosis – you can once more feel whole and at one with yourself and your world.

Motivational Courses Using NLP Hypnotherapy And Life Coaching Part 1/3

Throughout my St Albans motivation courses, I make it clear that in order to be motivated you need to be moving. The word motivation leads us to think about being enthused, inspired and driven and these are important qualities for a human being to posses. They are the feelings that get us out of bed in the morning, that enable us to work in pressurised environment and that help us to grow. Everything in the universe is either growing or dying, and if you want to avoid the latter for as long as possible, there needs to be something in your life that helps you to feel as if you are growing. This is where St Albans Motivational courses can help.

Most people seek this growth from the work that they do, in their every day job. Others find it in a hobby. The challenge occurs when the work you are doing is not motivating, or not motivating enough. This can lead to a “flat” feeling or worse still, real negative emotions, but the lack of motivation may also prevent any action being taken that could potentially change things for the better.

A lack of motivation will eventually filter its way through into other areas of our lives, because these things are all interlinked. A person, who feels a lack of motivation at work, may be in bad spirits when they get home, and therefore not give the best of themselves to their relationship, or perhaps they will go wild socially to attempt to rebalance, and this could then have a negative impact on their health. In fact, this is the most common scenario and I have witnessed it firsthand. Many people I worked with in the past- and even myself, have been in disempowering or unstimulating jobs, and then spend Friday and Saturday night drinking too much, eating too much and generally over doing things. Now I am in a job that I love, providing NLP, Hypnotherapy and Life Coaching for motivation to those in St Albans, that constantly sets me worthwhile challenges I can say that I have a much more balanced lifestyle.

People require motivation for many different areas of their life- some need it to get them to the gym, others to give up smoking and others to change their career. In order to be completely committed to gaining motivation there are two things you must be willing to accept. One is pleasure (oh good!) and the other is pain (oh dear!). It’s the typical carrot and stick scenario and you must think of it this way: If you want to do something that you are currently not motivated to do, the chances are, you have probably considered all of the pleasurable ways it would be good for you to do it. For example, if you want to be motivated to go to the gym, you might list the following positive (pleasure/carrot) reasons:

1) I will look better when my body is fit

2) My body will be physically healthier

3) Exercising will help me to sleep better

4) I will meet more people

The Use of Biofeedback Devices in Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy

Biofeedback devices measure a range of physiological variables including brain waves (Electroencephalography), muscle tension (Electromyography) and the electrical conductivity of the skin (galvanic skin response). All of these variables indicate continuums of emotional arousal. It is precisely these measurements that are used in lie-detector machines as they pick up the most subtle of physiological changes – many outside of conscious awareness. Many biofeedback devices exist and create a feedback loop for the user. Having the ability to see these readings, the user can learn to gain control over these physiological measurements by relaxing and seeing (or hearing) measurements rise and fall in response to meditation, self-hypnosis or breathing techniques.

In my private hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and NLP practice, I sometimes elect to use a Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) meter with clients. Galvanic Skin Response (also called electro-dermal response) is a measure of the electrical conductivity of the skin. If I am using a GSR meter within a session, I first connect my clients to device by placing electrodes on two fingers on the same hand. After several minutes, I take an initial baseline reading. During the session, the meter readings will rise and fall in line with the emotional arousal of the client. In essence, the greater the presence of water and salt on the skin, the more conductive of electricity the skin is. Changes in sweat production in the fingertips can occur for a number of physiological reasons; however, there is a correlation between electrical conductivity of the skin and emotional arousal. A higher GSR reading tends to reflect an increase in emotional arousal (whether that emotion be anger, stress, anxiety, and startle response).

Whilst therapists develop great sensory acuity though many client hours experience, the GSR meter provides another tool to provide a clue that something is happening for the client. It is of particular use in hypnoanalysis or regression when the client has accessed an emotional memory and is experiencing it vividly. Whilst abreactions are easily spotted by a therapist, the GSR meter provides an early sign of emotional arousal that may assist the exploration of the traumatic material. The GSR reading can also be useful for testing the change in the client’s emotional arousal regarding phobias before and after the change work has been completed. The client’s responsiveness to hypnotic induction is clearly demonstrated by a falling reading on the GSR meter. The device can, therefore, be used to indicate when the client is deep enough into trance to make suggestions more direct. I recently conducted a hypnotherapy session and during a section about learning new skills, I mentioned being back at school to access and utilise that regressed learning state that children possess (this is a popular approach popularised by the late renowned hypnotherapist Milton Erickson). The meter rose rapidly at this moment although there were no visible changes to skin tone, breathing rate etc. At the end of the session, my client explained that she had enjoyed the experience but mention of the school had reminded her of a time when she had been bullied. Whilst not a significant event, it was nevertheless a demonstration of the usefulness of GSR meters within a therapeutic setting.

Biofeedback devices will never replace the skill of a therapist nor the importance of watching and listening but they can be a useful adjunct to the therapists toolkit in certain situations.

Pain Management and Hypnotherapy

bstitution of a painful sensation by a slightly less painful sensation can enable a patient to much more easily tolerate a persistent painful feeling. So, under self hypnosis, an example could be as follows: “the feeling I have of a stabbing pain might surprisingly become dulled, not quite so sharp, as if the knife causing the pain is slowly become blunted and dulled, I can still feel the sensation but it no longer bothers me, and this feeling can last for as long as I need it to last.”

2. Anaesthesia can be created, under hypnosis by a qualified Hypnotherapist, by the suggestion that the perception of pain is slowly but surely disappearing as the area that has the pain becomes numb. Or it may be a little easier for the patient to notice a growing feeling of comfort rather than one of diminishing pain. They simply feel the area of pain being replaced by a warm comfort spreading and slowly growing through the affected area.

3. The next technique is to displace the pain to another part of the body, or even to outside the body. This can allow the patient to experience the symptoms in a less vulnerable and less painful area. So under hypnosis the patient could be encouraged to move their stomach pain maybe into their thumb where there is less psychological impact, or to an area outside the body maybe a couple of feet away suspended in mid-air.

4. Disassociation is also an excellent technique for pain management. This is particularly useful when the patient does not need to be mobile, for instance at the dentist. A patient under hypnosis can be shown how to experience themselves in another time or place such as in a vivid daydream. “you may experience floating gently outside your body, maybe moving quietly over to the window to see what the outside world is doing” Or maybe the patient can be guided to float outside the room and the building altogether and experience travelling to any part of the world they may enjoy. This could be a walk on a warm and Sunny tropical beach, or maybe a trip through the snow covered mountains.

These techniques have proven to be very powerful at overcoming pain in chronic and acute pain sufferers.

Ethically it is important that a non-medically trained hypnotherapist should be familiar with medical evaluation and treatment alternatives. Pain patients must always ensure they have had a thorough physical examination by a trained doctor before seeking aid and assistance from hypnotherapy.

How Hypnotherapy Helps With Stress And Anxiety

Stress can be defined as a state we experience when there is a mismatch between perceived demands and our perceived ability to cope. Stress can also be defined as an adaptive response by a body to change in the environment. Stress response evolved to enable humans to deal with life-threatening dangers or stressors such as being confronted with a wild animal or perhaps a hostile human. Situations like this required action – the activation of stress response to wither stay and fight or to run away.

Today we hopefully won’t have to face the same dangers as our ancestors but the stress response to demanding situations we face is still with us and our mind and body still prepare for fight or flight when confronted with this equivalent of the wild animal. This is where the problem may begin as activation of the fight or flight response with no physical outlet, such as if we are stuck in a traffic jam and can’t fight it or flee it, or maybe an unfair confrontation in the workplace where once again the response for action may be triggered but we cant vent it by fighting or running away without consequences we would rather avoid. Perhaps both of these events and more are experienced on the same day, perhaps every day, and the stress builds within us until it can damage our health if a solution is not found

Stress isn’t always bad – the stress response was designed to help and protect us and some people even place themselves in stressful situations they know they can handle for excitement and ‘the rush’ as it is often called.

We all experience stress in different ways depending upon our personality type, conditioning and possible training also.

When we face a stressor but perceive we have the ability to deal with it successfully a feeling of success and achievement can be gained. Getting the balance right between good stress to motivate us and encourage us to grow, and our ability to cope with the stress is possibly the key to remaining healthy, positive and active in whatever arena of life we find ourselves.

Our ability to cope with stress can be affected by our diet and the intake of good substances that out body needs to remain strong and flexible and to repair itself when needed. Also we should avoid anything that could cause us to be more stressed or weaker such as drugs, alcohol, smoking etc.

Finally, stress can be external, some event or situation that is causing stress, or internal, attitudes or emotions that lead to stress (anxiety, guilt, low self esteem, fear, etc).

What is the Fight/Flight Response? Why do we still have it?

The ‘Fight or Flight Response’ is a physiological reaction and is the body’s response to a stressor.

Changes in hormones prepare a person to either stay and deal with a stressor or to take flight/run away. This immediate state of alarm is when the body prepares to take action, and in this state a person will be extremely alert to their surroundings but also very anxious and possibly unable to concentrate.

The body will slow down systems not vital in responding to the stressor, such as the digestive system, which is why a person in a fight or flight situation may have a dry mouth and a nervous/upset stomach. The body will make other preparations such as improved cooling for the body as more energy is used and this will result in perspiration.

The fight or flight response is a very old and very basic response and has been with us for a very long time. It was originally a response to danger that would prepare our ancestors to fight the wild beast or the enemy who might suddenly threaten or confront them, or to take flight and literally run away from the danger.

This response is triggered when we send a message of alarm to a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This area of the brain will then send a signal to the glands to release adrenaline, cortisol and endorphin into the blood stream. Increased levels of adrenaline increase heart rate and blood flow which in turn brings extra oxygen and glucose to the muscles. Cortisol causes an increase in amino-acids and sugars in the blood. Amino-acids are crucial for the repair and recovery of damaged tissues which may occur under stress and the blood sugar adds to the availability of glucose (fuel) for the body.

The release of endorphin, which is a morphine like substance only more powerful, provides the body’s natural tranquilizing system. Pain is blocked and a feeling of euphoria may be experienced, both helping to get the body through the situation it may find itself in due to stress.

We still have this response, as it is still necessary to prepare and protect us in times of alarm, such as being involved in an emergency situation of any kind, or being confronted with any form of potentially life threatening danger.

Once the initial stages of this fight or flight response are over, a person will have a psychological reaction to the stressor which will be based upon many variables including, personality type, conditioning, age, physical and mental ability, and their knowledge relevant to the situation to be dealt with.

It is very often the resulting symptoms of this fight or flight response kicking in that we tend to call a panic attack. what actually happens is that we may be in a situation where we can’t fight or flight, such as a meeting or on a train, and so we become more and more anxious and may feel as though we will pass out, or be sick, or any one of a number of responses. What often happens then,is we find we have a desperate need to urinate, and that is another way the subconscious mind will sometimes attempt to gain our attention and force us to leave the arena in which we find ourselves at the time. It is normally the feeling of not being able to escape, and knowing that we might have this strong feeling to fight or flight that causes much of the anxiety and expectation of problems for most people who find they need help to overcome their problem.

Also, many people….no…that should be most people who suffer from panic attacks and anxiety will normally have the need for some Obsessive compulsive actions in their life…it can often be a type of coping, or controlling strategy.

Why hypnotherapy is totally different from any other form of therapy?

Hypnotherapy is different from any other form of therapy because of the way in which the therapy part happens while one is in hypnosis. Put another way, hypnotherapy is a very effective combination of hypnosis, a trance or altered state of mind and deep relaxation, and the chosen therapy, which might be for example; suggestion therapy, regression, ego states therapy, neuro-linguistic-programming or hypnoanalysis.

Hypnosis allows an individual to enter a state of deep relaxation which in itself is a very useful therapy for combating stress. It also allows one to become calm and focused, as all parts of the mind work together and concentrate on solving the problem at hand, and therefore making the very best use of the chosen therapy as it is applied.

Why it is so helpful in cases of stress, anxiety and panic attacks?

Hypnosis is a state in which the conscious critical faculty is temporarily suspended or distracted and in which all parts of the mind work in harmony for the good of the whole being.

When in hypnosis an individual can become very relaxed and at the same time very aware and ‘sharp’, mentally focused.

For the computer literate, I would liken hypnosis to the ‘safe mode’ on a computer, where if a part of the system is acting up or malfunctioning, placing the system in safe mode allows for investigation and repair to be carried out safely while minimising the risk to the normal operating systems. In some sports it would be like a ‘time-out’, where all parts of the team come together briefly to review the current state of play, to identify where poor choices may have affected the outcomes and to choose a new strategy to move forward with.

In the normal hurly burly of life we seldom have time to take a time out, or to go into safe mode to pull together our resources and to calmly take stock and plan our best way forward. Hypnosis then, is a safe, relaxing state in which we can let go the tensions in and around us for a short period, and in which, if we desire it, a skilled therapist can guide us through the stages of investigation, discovery, planning and repair we may need.

Hypnotherapy therefore provides relaxation (and clients of good therapists learn self-hypnosis so they can find this deep relaxation for themselves) and is therefore useful at even this basic level, as a kind of first aid. The good therapist will help the client to find any repressed emotions, triggers and false instincts from the past that are a kind of out-of-date, erroneous, or maybe just no longer wanted or needed programming, that loops around once triggered to cause us much anxiety and feelings of panic, but we often don’t know why. Following this, the wonderful power of hypnotic suggestion, and Neuro-Linguistic programming techniques will be used to provide new and efficient programming to support moves forward into a much more positive life with a better outlook on everything..
